For current flow to occur, a complete path is essential. This means that there must be a continuous circuit through which electrons can move. When the path is complete, the physical conditions are met for electrical charge to flow from the source of voltage, such as a battery or generator, through the components of a circuit, and back to the source.

In the absence of a complete path, current cannot flow.
